Atlantic Eye Institute
A Wave of Great Vision Options
It’s a first in Florida and a big plus for First Coast patients—the new 400hz WaveLight ALLEGRETTO WAVE® Eye-Q Laser System at Atlantic Eye Institute. For patients, this truly state-of-the-art excimer laser technology means safer and faster vision correction with superior results.

“We have been eagerly anticipating the ALLEGRETTO WAVE 400 technology, and we were the first in the state to purchase the system,” says ophthalmologist Neil T. Shmunes, M.D. “We have been using it to help patients since August. For patients who have been waiting to have laser vision correction, it opens up new possibilities that weren’t available before now. It was designed to minimize the aftereffects of nighttime glare and haloes often associated with LASIK procedures, and we’re finding the results to be extremely successful.”
The WAVE 400 is different because of its speed and its accuracy, and it is far gentler on patients’ eyes. “It can reduce the length of surgery by more than half, and patients’ healing time after surgery is far less than with other types of equipment,” says ophthalmologist Richard L. Simmons, M.D.
“The WAVE 400 speeds up surgery, but that alone isn’t what makes it effective,” Dr. Shmunes notes. “I compare it to a car that goes 1000 miles an hour. That’s great, but along with that you have to have the ability to steer. This technology allows us to steer the laser beam and make each tiny incision in the precise location with great speed and safety, even when there is rapid eye movement during surgery.”
The WAVE 400 is the first system to allow customized correction for patients with presbyopia (those who need reading glasses). “It puts excellent, glasses-free eyesight within reach of a larger number of patients, including those with myopia, astigmatism or other eye conditions,” says Dr. Shmunes. “It allows us to better personalize each vision correction procedure to address the unique shape of each patient’s cornea.”
The team of doctors at Atlantic Eye Institute continues to invest in technology that will benefit their patients. They also invest a great deal of time consulting with each patient to help them achieve optimum eye health and appropriate vision correction. In addition to doctors Shmunes and Simmons, the practice includes ophthalmologist Charles V. Duss, M.D. and board-certified optometrist C. Steven Lancaster, O.D.
The “bench strength” of the Atlantic Eye Institute team means a member of the practice is on call for patient eye care emergencies 24/7. Patients gain an extra measure of reassurance knowing the Atlantic Eye Institute doctor who takes their after-hours emergency call will be familiar with their case and have rapid access to their medical records.
