Service

Our friendly, highly trained staff is dedicated to making your refractive surgery run smoothly. Our surgeons perform the pre-operative evaluation to determine whether or not you are a suitable candidate for refractive surgery at either our Bennett Road or Beaches office. Refractive surgery at AEI is always tailored to the needs of each individual patient. Frank discussions with you regarding your expectations, needs, risks, benefits and surgical followup are the rule at Atlantic Eye Institute.

On the day of surgery, patients having refractive surgery at AEI have a positive, energetic surgical staff receiving them. The staff administers pre-operative medications, educates patients about the actual surgical experience and provides detailed post-operative instructions. Prior to surgery, our surgeons are on-site to answer any further questions. All patients are examined the day after surgery by their surgeons. Our surgeons are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, if needed, and will follow you throughout your post-operative care. We do not "farm out" post-operative patients to stack in new patients and we do not share "call" with other practices. When you need your physician, he is available to you.

AEI Surgeons

Neil T. Shmunes, M.D. and Richard L. Simmons, M.D. are your surgeons at Atlantic Eye Institute. Both physicians are board-certified ophthalmologists with academic medical honors. Drs. Shmunes and Simmons have been performing refractive surgery since its inception. They are adept at performing all types of refractive procedures available, as one procedure may be more suitable for a patient than another.  AEI recently welcomed Charles Duss, M.D.  Dr. Duss is a highly trained ophthalmic surgeon specializing in cataract and refractive surgery.

Drs. Shmunes and Simmons have been in practice in the Jacksonville area for many years. Both have been Chief of Ophthalmology at local area hospitals and have staff privileges at Baptist Medical Center-Beaches, St. Luke's, St. Vincent's and Memorial hospitals. Both are members of numerous medical societies including Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, the American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgeons and Refractive Surgery Interest Group of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Drs. Shmunes, Simmons, and Duss do not limit their practice to refractive surgery. They also provide medical and surgical treatment for most eye diseases, conditions or trauma. Using lasers and conventional surgery for treating cosmetic problems of the eyes and face, the doctors at AEI are highly skilled oculoplastic surgeons as well.

Facilities

Atlantic Eye Institute has built a dedicated surgical suite for all of our refractive laser procedures in our Jacksonville Beach office. AEI has a complete outpatient surgical center on premises at the Beaches for our cataract as well as our cosmetic surgery patients. Two board-certified anesthesiologists are on staff at the surgery center to make your experience comfortable and safe. Our LASIK patients have a comfortable, quiet room in which to rest prior to and following the procedure.
