Elective Lens Implants for Cataract Surgery

~PREMIUM INTRAOCULAR LENS IMPLANTS~

When a Cataract matures to the point of affecting a patient’s vision, Doctor’s usually are motivated to recommend surgery.  Cataract surgery is done by removing the clouded natural lens of our eye and replacing it with an artificial lens that will help the patient see better.

Standard Intra-ocular Lens implants are made to function for distance only or mono-vision, which means that a pre-existing astigmatism will still be present.  That ultimately means that glasses will be required to fix the astigmatism.

Now technology has advanced to where patient’s have an option to receive “Premium IOL Implants,” if the patient is a candidate.  These lenses are made to fix an astigmatism or allow the patient to have multi-focal vision seeing near and far.

Atlantic Eye Institute uses two premium implants for our patients depending on their candidacy, being the Alcon® AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOL and AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL.

Alcon® AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOL is a lens implant that is multi-focal that allows a patient to see distance and near in both eyes.

Alcon®AcrySof® IQ Toric IOL is lens implant that corrects pre-existing astigmatism in a patient’s eye allowing them to only need reading glasses for when presbyopia takes place.

Alcon® has a great resource for cataract information along with the mentioned  lens implants at:  http://www.reclaimyourvision.com/intraocular-lens.aspx

How do you determine if you are a candidate for these type of lens implants?

At your yearly dilated eye evaluation ask your Doctor if these lenses would be recommended for you.

Do insurances cover the cost of Premium IOL implants?

Because Premium IOL implants are considered “Elective” and most insurances do not cover the cost.

Interested in Eyelid Surgery?

A blepharoplasty is an upper and/or lower eyelid surgery that an oculoplastic surgeon performs to removes excess skin and fatty tissue.
As skin loses elasticity your upper eyelid tends to droop causing a hooded affect, and in some cases blocking out part of your visual field. The elasticity loss also causes lower eyelids to sag. Depending on the severity, the surgery may be considered cosmetic or medically necessary.

March is Workplace Eye Health and Safety Month!

This Month is dedicated to make people aware of the importance of Workplace Eye Health and Safety.  Often times we overlook simple safety precautions when protecting our eyes due to the convenience.  When we feel we are able to function by seeing does not mean that we should overlook routine eye evaluations, many eye diseases may occur without any visual side effects in beginning stages.  Accidents are unpredictable and not worth the potential permanent eye.  Simple preventions are:  Being educated about diseases of the eyes, wearing protective eye gear like goggles, wearing sunglasses outdoors, and having an wash station in an environment where hazardous chemicals are present.  A great website for resources and information is:  www.preventblindness.org

In the workplace it is recommended to have an accountability system to educate everyone and provide the necessary materials.

If you have any questions or would like to set up a routine eye evaluation please contact The Eye Guys® at either office:  Beaches Location 904-241-7865, Bennett Rd. Location 904-731-7500
