It was a first in Florida and a big plus for First Coast patients–the new 400 Hz WaveLight ALLEGRETTO WAVE® Eye-Q Laser System at Atlantic Eye Institute (AEI). This truly state-of-the-art excimer laser technology means safer and faster vision correction with superior results. “We eagerly anticipated the ALLEGRETTO WAVE® 400 technology and were the first in the state to purchase the system,” says ophthalmologist Neil T. Shmunes, M.D. “We have been using it to help our patients since August 2007. For patients who have been waiting to have laser vision correction, it opens up new possibilities that were not available before now. The ALLEGRETTO WAVE® was designed to minimize the after effects of nighttime glare and halos often associated with LASIK. We are finding the results to be extremely successful.”

The ALLEGRETTO WAVE® 400 is different because of its speed and accuracy, and it is far more gentle on patients’ eyes. “It can reduce the length of surgery by more than half, and patients’ healing time after surgery is shorter than with other types of equipment used for refractive surgery,” says ophthalmologist Richard L. Simmons, M.D. Adds Dr. Shmunes, “The ALLEGRETTO WAVE® 400 speeds up surgery, but that alone is not what makes it effective. This technology not only delivers treatment quickly, but also allows the surgeon to make each tiny laser incision in the precise location–even if the patient moves his eyes during the procedure.” Furthermore, the ALLEGRETTO WAVE® 400 allows a larger treatment zone on the cornea than older equipment, thus minimizing post-surgical problems with glare or halo problems in low light or at night. Surgeons at AEI also use the ALLEGRETTO WAVE® 400 to finely tune vision for some patients after cataract extraction.
