Refractive Surgery
LASIK/PRK for all refractive errors

When you are choosing LASIK or any other refractive surgery, you want to ensure the best possible outcome. Choose the team of experienced and expert eye professionals at Atlantic Eye Institute.

Our expert team, surgeons Neil T. Shmunes, M.D., Richard L. Simmons, M.D. and Charles V. Duss, M.D., together have 45 years of experience in performing refractive surgery. Each surgeon is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist with superior academic credentials. Coupled with Dr. C. Steven Lancaster’s 20 years experience in the clinical care of refractive surgery patients and supervision of our caring support staff, AEI offers a unique value for your refractive investment.

State-of-the-Art Technology. Refractive errors of the human eye are related to the curvature of the cornea, the power of the natural lens, and the length of the eyeball. There are many different modalities available to address such abnormalities. Your constant in the rapidly changing environment of refractive surgery is your surgeon's knowledge, experience, and technical skill.

Before surgery at AEI, each refractive surgical candidate undergoes a complete ocular examination by a surgeon. Tests include determination of corneal thickness (some corneas are too thin to undergo LASIK), corneal topography (mapping the corneal surface) and pupillary dilation in low light. In those patients who choose refractive correction through cataract or clear lens extraction with implanted lenses, all testing is done prior to surgery using proven technology. These tests include determination of the length and shape of each eyeball and overall intraocular health including retinal assessment and dilating capacity of the pupils. Your surgeon, using testing data, does the mathematical calculations necessary for corneal and/or cataract surgery.

Procedures Tailored to Your Individual Needs. Refractive surgery at AEI is always customized to the lifestyle of each patient. We offer treatment modalities to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. After a complete pre-operative work-up, the patient and surgeon will decide which treatment (LASIK, PRK, PTK, clear lens or cataract extraction, etc.) is most appropriate to maximize ocular health and individual lifestyle.

For patients who are not candidates for refractive surgery or for those who do not want surgery, AEI provides Corneal Refractive Therapy using contact lenses. Usually worn only at night, these lenses reshape the cornea producing excellent vision without daytime glasses or surgery. And, for those patients with tear film problems before or after any surgical procedure, AEI has a Dry Eye Clinic to address these disorders.

Follow-Up Care. You will be examined during your initial evaluation by your surgeon. He will see you again just before surgery and the day after surgery, as well as in future follow-up appointments. If needed, the AEI doctors are available for care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. When you need your physician, AEI will be there.

Emphasis on Patient Education. Our highly trained staff is dedicated to patient education. We will talk with you about the surgical experience and your expectations, needs, risks, and benefits. We can provide both written material and videos detailing your procedure. Prior to surgery, our surgeons are on-site to answer any further questions. Please call AEI's Refractive Surgery Coordinator.
